University

Some of us are very skilled, some of us are new to photography, but all of us should be always learning, both as technicians and as artists. So we want to help provide some resources to do that. In addition to classes that we'll offer at Frazer, we'll post things here as well, so scroll down, and enjoy the links.

Learn with the Virtual Camera!
So, you have a camera, and maybe it has a dial, probably green, with a setting on it that says "Auto". And this is where you leave your camera, because that makes sure every picture will be good, right? Well, that's true in principle, but your camera is a machine, not a photographer. You can take control back from your camera, and get better results. What is an aperture? What difference does the shutter speed make? Or ISO? Huh? Well, the very best tool I've found is an online virtual camera. Play with this, and you will grasp how keeping shutter, aperture, and ISO in balance can create wonderful photos. And then you can take your camera out of "Auto"mode and learn when to use aperture priority, shutter priority, or even full-manual mode!

The Virtual Camera can be found here. This is awesome. Change the light settings in the top left to see how low or high light levels affect photography. Then decide what exposure mode you want to use. These will match what you probably have on your camera. The red flags that pop out to the right show you what you can adjust in the different exposure modes, and the digital readout shows you what changes your camera makes to compensate. Meaning, if you change your aperture setting in Aperture priority mode, your camera changes the shutter speed to compensate. What a great learning tool!
